GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Gettysburg College women’s lacrosse program will host a winter tournament and clinic for high school girls on February 13, 2011 from 9:30 a.m. until 1:30pm at Clark and Shirk Fields and inside Hauser Field House.

Payment as well as a completed registration form must be received by February 1, 2011. Cost for players to participate is $50. Players may register as either a team (ranging in size from six to ten players) or they may register as individuals and we will place them on a team of independents. We will take a maximum of 48 teams so it will be a first come – first serve registration format.

The day is designed for players who are looking to polish their skills before the start of their seasons. The morning will start out with a brief clinic covering 5v5 attacking and defensive principles and will include demonstrations from our nationally ranked Bullet’s squad as well as coaching from the Gettysburg coaching staff. We will then progress to the 5v5 tournament in which players will be able to put the clinic’s theory into practice and challenge their skills in a fun and competitive environment.

Players should bring the following with them to the clinic: eye wear, mouth guard, stick, goalie equipment (if applicable), water bottle and clothing for both indoor and outdoor environments. Cross-trainers are the recommended footwear. Bring warm weather gear as we will be OUTSIDE playing on our turf fields.

The event will take place regardless of weather as we will move the clinic and 5v5 tournaments indoors if inclement weather should occur. Closer to the event, be sure to check your email for updates on location and possible time changes.

Cantele is Metro Region Coach of the Year

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Gettysburg College’s Carol Cantele ’83 was named the 2010 Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Metro Region Coach of the Year according to a recent release by the organization. Cantele earned the region’s top honor for the fifth time in the last 11 seasons after guiding the Bullets to an 18-4 overall record, a 9-0 regular season record in the Centennial Conference, and the program’s ninth consecutive appearance in the NCAA Division III Tournament.

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – After months of crunching the numbers to select the top athletes for weekly recognition on our website, the Sports Information staff has decided to let you, the fans, have a voice in picking the top male and female student-athletes from the past year at Gettysburg College. Over the course of the month of June, fans will be able to vote for their favorite student-athletes in polls available on the main page of GettysburgSports.com and on the Gettysburg College Athletics fan page on Facebook.

The popular poll on the athletics website will feature the men’s nominees from June 1 to June 15, while the women will fill the poll for the final two weeks of the month (June 16-30). Both men’s and women’s polls will be available on the athletics Facebook page for the entirety of the month. At the end of June, the votes from both polls will be counted and the male and female student-athletes with the most will be named Athletes of the Year in a press release on our website. There’s no certificate, award, or trophy involved in this process. At most, the winners will receive campus bragging rights and the knowledge that their efforts on their respective playing venues were acknowledged and admired by the campus community. With a score of worthy candidates to consider, the Sports Information staff had to make some stipulations on who to include on the final ballots.

Our finalists had to meet at least one of two conditions: 1.) All-Centennial Conference First Team; and 2). School record breaker. Using those guidelines, we came up with a list of eight men and seven women. We also didn’t want to split votes between a sport, so we combined two of the male candidates into one super-charged nominee. Voting will end on June 30th so make sure you visit GettysburgSports.com and Facebook to make your voice heard!

On Saturday we bounced back with a great game against Swarthmore. We got in the scoring groove early and continued to create scoring opportunities all day. Marnie Commins broke out of her shell with 1 goal, 6 assists, and a huge smile on her face. Defense had another stellar day with both Kristen Krammer and Laura Mac anchoring the unit, neither letting up any goals.

It was quite a battle on Clark Field last Tuesday when Middlebury came to town. Although this game was close in all the statistical categories, Middlebury went on a serious scoring run and We Bullets were struggling to find the back of the net. We learned alot about ourselves on this day and our courage to keep fighting until the end. We pulled within two and had our opportunities but in the end time was not on our side. Our Player of the Game against Middlebury is Defender Becky Lutz. For 60 minutes Becky played with a "refuse to lose" attitude coming up with crucial groundballs and draw controls. Becky anchored a solid defensive effort this day, and a defensive unit that proves to get better each and every game.

Another great win for the Bullets which extends our streak to 6-0. We mixed it up with alot of people this game and it paid off big time. Player of the game, Hollis Stahl found the back of the net early and often finishing the day with 6 points (5g,1a) as well as being a force both on the draw cirlce (6dc) and the defensive end. We're back in action this Saturday at Muhlenberg.

Before we knew it, it was game day again, this time it was was Thursday and the matchup was between the Gettysburg Bullets vs. Catholic Cardinals....and what a game it was! Into the break Gettysburg lead 7-5 but it wasn't long before Catholic went on a dangerous run to make it 10-7. We stepped up our defensive pressure and held Catholic scoreless for the next 16 minutes and with with less than 30 seconds to go, scored 2 goals to send it to overtime. In the overtime period we were able to score 2 goals early and come away with a "W." Both Hannah Church and Lexie Hearn were tremendous on the day. In crunch time Lexie came up with valuable draw controls, and Hannah was a force on the offensive end. The Bullets dug deep this game and proved that even if we're down, we're not out. Great fight and Great win Gettysburg!

Well, we're back and have a lot of catching up to do on the details of our trip. The sun finally came out just in time for our first game on Tuesday against Wittenberg University. Our Bullets were ready to play from the very first whistle and we saw some big things happening from both familiar and new faces. Senior Erin Cushing came out of the box ready to leave her mark, and she did just that. Erin had an all around solid performance. We saw lot's of hustle and great decision making which lead to her finishing the game with 1 goal and 2 caused turnovers. Erin is our Player of the Game in 16-2 win against Wittenberg. Great game Bullets!!

Tuesday was a busy day for the gals in Orange & Blue. We were back on the field later that day for a contest against Colby-Sawyer. This was an exciting game because the future of Gettysburg Lacrosse was before our very eyes. Our players were a pleasure to watch! They played with speed, confidence and determination on both ends of the field. While many names landed in the scoring column, First year, Lindsay Menton wreaked havoc all over the field. Lindsay finished the day with 8 points (3 goals, 5 assists), 2 groundballs, 2 caused turnovers, and 8 draw controls. Lindsay is one our team's hardest workers and it has sure paid off!!

We had another very wet day yesterday, but as always we made it work. We had a good practice in the morning despite a bit of thunder and lightening, and then we improvised in the afternoon.... Earlier this year we discovered a little gem called p90x which is how we made it through some cold early morning practices in February. As it turns out, p90x works if there is torrential rain too, but we didn't have a DVD player so we had to improvise yet again.....this time with b90x.

It was a rainy day in San Antonio today so the team's motto of Tanned and Toned will have to wait another day. But, I think our team would take a mild rain in Texas over a freezing snow in Gettysburg any day. So we're happy!

We had two great practices today despite the weather and our team is working very hard!! Because of the flight restrictions we were only able to bring a certain number of lacrosse balls with us, so the ones we have are like gold. Birthday girl Jess Crane almost had to lace up her PF Flyers, scale a fence into a backyard, and pickle the beast to retrieve a couple of our 8 meter shots that went high and wide. Needless to say, we will be practicing them again tomorrow.

Overall, a good Day 2 on SB '10. Looking forward to tomorrow!

We all remembered our ID's, everyone's bags weighed under 50lbs, we didn't lose the stick bags (or any players) and we made it in time to have a Tex-Mex dinner. So far this Spring Break trip to San Antonio has been great!! We are staying in a hotel right by the Riverwalk so there is much to do. In fact, if you look out the window you can practically see the Alamo.....not as big as you would think it is. Time to get to bed....we have an early morning!

Gettysburg Bullets give back to the community through "Girls on the Run"

Girls on the Run is a program which aims to instill healthy body image and good eating and exercise habits in elementery school-aged girls. High school and college-aged students are paired with elementery school aged girls to help the girls train to run a 5K. Female college students act as role models of good help, and encourage their partners to exercise regularly and help the girls build confidence and develop a positive image of themselves and their bodies.

The Gettysburg Women's Lacrosse program has been participating in the Girls on the Run program, in conjunction with the affiliated Gettysburg area elementery schools and Gettysburg College, for the past three years. In our involvement with Girls on the Run, the lacrosse team has been able to give back to the Gettysburg community, which has always supported our team throughout the season.

Hey Hey,

Ok, I'm in Florence, Italy. I live with with my friend Caroline from Gettysburg and we live with an Italian family. Gina and Salvatore and their kids Davide and Elisabetta. They yell at each other all the time, and hardly speak any english.

My favorite thing I have done so far was when we went to the Amalfi Coast and swam through caves and went cliff jumping. The water was clear blue. Although I'm sure that sky diving will be my favorite thing after I do it in two weeks. I promise I won’t die.

My favorite food is definitely the Gnocchi. It kinda tastes like pasta, but it's little bits of potato wrapped in pasta. Aaaaaahhhh, I really want it right now. SOOO GOOOD. Nothing special to drink here for me....so my favorite is water? They don't have Snapple, which has really been a huge issue for me these past 3 months.

The things I'll miss most when I leave is all the beautiful buildings and stuff I get to look at every day, and speaking in Italian (it makes me feel cool), and the fact that we don't have school on Fridays, aaaannndd this really good chocolate milk I discovered in the grocery store (pathetic yet true).

The thing I am looking forward to the most when I get home is AMERICAN CHEESE, hummus, bagels, turkey, sushi, snapple, my family/friends (obvy), SNOW, driving, and my bed....I realize most of those things are food, but come on. Oh, and the lax season DUHHHH.

Junior Goalie, Laura Block has spent the Fall semester in South Africa and we want to know.....what has she been up to???

I miss you! Hope all is well at the 'Burg and you aren't causing too much trouble. Just kidding. Can't wait to see all of you soon!

I am at Rhodes University in Grahamstown, South Africa, on the Eastern Cape, about and hour and a half outside of Port Elizabeth and I live by myself.

The best part of South Afirca, aside from traveling of course is volunteering. I volunteer in the township at least twice a week at two community centers. The first place, St. Mary's, is a center for the most impoverished children in the part of the district reserved for "coloureds" during apartheid. At St. Mary's I work with the U.S. NGO One Laptop Per Child, which gives all the kids at the center computers on which I mostly attempt to teach them basic skills. The second center is a place called Ragalan Road, which is an afterschool program for HIV orphans who are raising themselves and their siblings in the township. The kids are ages 6-14, all speak Xhosa, that language with all the clicks in it, which is really hard to learn, but the kids are the most amazing people ever! We do art projects and play those recess and PE games you miss most from elementary school. I even taught them Wizards, Midgets and Giants, thank you Hilton Head Spring Break!

The food is a little dissappointinig, but South Africa has a lot of Indian influence, and it's cheap so we often grab takeout. The best drink by far is a Cider called Hunter's Dry. Good stuff!

When I leave I will miss all the freedom I have here, the friends I've made, and mostly, waking up everyday not knowing what's going to happen, who I'm going to meet or what adventure awaits...

What are you most looking forward to about being a captain in 2010?

I'm looking forward to contributing to my team to the best of my ability, and being part of the leadership of a team that has the potential to be the best team we've ever been in my four years at Gettysburg.

What are you most excited about in the 2010 season?

I am excited and anxious to see how our Senior class steps up in our leadership roles this year. I am also very excited to see how the First-years will contribute to our team, both in talent and personality. We are looking to carry a larger squad this year, which means that we have more opportunities to change and expand our game. The thing I am most excited about is hosting the Final Four on Clark Field. I know that my teammates would love to win the crown this year at home on Clark, and that we will work harder than we have ever worked in order to acheive that goal.

What is your favorite drill in practice? What is your least favorite?

My favorite drill is probably the one when Barb lets us hit the attackers with the football pads, but sometimes I get a little carried away with that one. I also really like working with our zone in 7v7, and I also like the "4v4 with the two outlets" because it is fast paced and makes you work a little harder on defense because you have to cover more area. My least favorite.....Um, definitely the "I hate the midfield drill" OR "Undercut" OR "Ground ball to groundball drill." Lot's of running!

Do you prefer running or lifting better?

This is going to sound sad, but I prefer running because it means I can eat more dessert from the dessert counter at Servo!

What are you most looking forward to about being a captain in 2010?

I learned a lot about being a captain last year. How to put my team before myself and do so willingly and happily. I learned that being a captain is not easy and not always fun. As a captain last year I learned a lot about my teammates and was able to connect with them individually. I hope to build upon that this year. This year is unique because of how close our senior class is. We have all been playing together for a long time and have built strong connections on and off the field. As a captain this year I can rely on those strong relationships to help me in leading the team.

What are you most excited about in the 2010 season?

I am absolutely looking forward to every part of this season (that does not necessarily include pre-season ha). I have been playing sports my entire life and it is a big part of who I am. I am very nervous about lacrosse season ending because it will be the end ofall my years of hard work. Because of that fear I am going to make sure that I soak up every second I have left. I am looking forward to building a new team and making this season my most memorable one.

What is your favorite drill in practice? Least favorite?

My favorite drill is...steal the bacon!!

My least favorite drill would have to be "undercut."

Do you prefer running or lifting better?

I think i prefer lifting better than running because although it makes you much more sore afterwards, its not as painful at the time haha.

Meet the Coaches

Carol Cantele has molded the Gettysburg College women’s lacrosse team into one of the premier programs across the nation over the course of her 17 seasons at the helm. She is Gettysburg’s all-time leader in victories, compiling a career record of 230-80 (.742), and she ranks 10th all-time among all NCAA coaches (all divisions) in career victories with a record of 254-103 (.711) over 21 seasons.

Cantele, who is fifth among active NCAA Division III head coaches in wins, has guided the Bullets to a conference record six Centennial Conference championships (2000, 2002-06), nine appearances in the NCAA Division III playoffs (2000, 2002-09), and 13-straight winning seasons. Cantele has coached 25 Bullets to Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) All-America recognition, including three national players of the year.

Gettysburg has won at least 14 games each season since 2000, including a school-record 21 en route to the program’s fifth consecutive CC championship and a national runner-up showing in 2006. That season, the Bullets achieved their first No. 1 national ranking, a feat they duplicated in 2007 with a run to the NCAA semifinals.

Gettysburg’s success continued in 2009 as Cantele took a young team devoid of any returning All-Americans to the NCAA semifinals for the third time in four seasons. The Bullets polished off the season with a 16-4 overall mark and ranked seventh in the final IWLCA national rankings.

Cantele has achieved the highest honors her field has to offer, being named the NCAA Coach of the Year by the IWLCA, Inside Lacrosse, and womenslacrosse.com in 2006 and being tabbed Metro Region Coach of the Year four times. In 2009, she was awarded the Judith M. Sweet Commitment Award by the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletics Administrators (NACWAA), given to those individuals who have provided outstanding leadership and commitment to colleagues and student-athletes in intercollegiate athletics.

Cantele reached a coaching milestone in 2008 with her 200th career victory at Gettysburg when the Bullets defeated Gwynedd-Mercy College 21-2 on March 3. On April 10, 2002, Cantele became the program’s all-time coaching victories leader and the first Gettysburg women’s lacrosse coach to win 100 games when the Bullets downed Dickinson College 16-9. She led her 1995, 1997, and 2001 squads to the Eastern College Athletic Conference Division III Mid-Atlantic playoffs, capturing the championship in 1995.

Cantele also compiled a school-record 121 coaching victories and five conference championships in 10 years with the Gettysburg field hockey program before resigning in 2002 to focus on women’s lacrosse and her new role as Gettysburg’s senior women’s administrator.

Prior to returning to her alma mater, Cantele turned around the lacrosse program at Plymouth State University, taking a 3-9 team in her first season there to a 10-2 team in her last in 1992. In her four seasons at the helm, she was 24-23. She also coached the Panthers’ field hockey team for two seasons, leading the squad to a 20-11-2 record and an appearance in the ECAC semifinals.

Cantele served as a graduate assistant with the field hockey team at Miami (Ohio) University from 1986-88 where she attained an M.A. in physical education with an emphasis in sport psychology/coaching behavior. She also served as the head coach of the club lacrosse team at Miami.

Cantele is a 1983 graduate of Gettysburg and played both field hockey and lacrosse as an undergraduate. She was a member of the 1980 field hockey team that captured Gettysburg’s only team national championship. She resides in Gettysburg with her husband, Mike, who is the head athletic trainer at Gettysburg College.

Barb Jordan enters her eighth season as head field hockey coach and assistant women’s lacrosse coach at Gettysburg College in 2009-10. The former head women’s lacrosse coach and assistant field hockey coach at Bucknell, Jordan has guided the Bullets field hockey team to a berth in the Centennial Conference playoffs in each of the last six seasons and an ECAC Division III championship in 2005. During her tenure, she has compiled a 79-55 overall record, including a 48-21 mark in conference play.

With Jordan leading the way, Gettysburg has won at least 10 games in each of the past six seasons, including tying a program record with 17 victories in 2005. The Bullets have spent time in the national polls in each of the last five seasons. In 2008, the team posted a record of 13-6, marking the second-most victories under Jordan’s tutelage. Gettysburg ranked as high as 15th in the national poll and reached the semifinals of the CC Tournament.

As an assistant with the Bullets women’s lacrosse team, Jordan has played in integral role in one of the top programs in Division III. Over the last seven years with her on staff, Gettysburg is 124-22, has claimed four conference championships, and has reached the NCAA Tournament each year. The Bullets lacrosse team has made three appearances in the national semifinals, including a runner-up finish in 2006.

A 1986 graduate of Penn State with a Bachelor of Science degree in recreation and parks, Jordan came to Gettysburg after compiling a 47-40 record in six years with the Bison women’s lacrosse team, including a 13-3 mark in 1997. Her 47 victories are the most by a Bucknell women’s lacrosse coach.

In addition, she spent five seasons as an assistant coach with the Bucknell field hockey program, helping guide that squad to a program-record 14 victories in 1999.

Before arriving in Lewisburg, Jordan spent one year as an assistant women’s lacrosse coach at Division I Vanderbilt and six years as a physical education teacher and varsity girl’s lacrosse coach at the National Cathedral School in Washington, D.C., serving as the chair of the physical education department from 1993-95.

At Penn State, Jordan was a three-time women's lacrosse All-American, as well as a three-time team most valuable player and team captain in 1985. She also earned varsity letters on the Nittany Lions' field hockey team in 1981 and 1982. She was a member of the United States women's lacrosse team from 1982-89 and was a starter on the 1986 U.S. World Cup that captured a silver medal. She also served as captain of the U.S. under-23 team that toured England, Scotland and Wales in 1987.

She won the Beth Allen Award in 1992, presented annually by the United States Women's Lacrosse Association to a lacrosse player at the national tournament who exhibits highly developed skills, discipline, and a sense of sportsmanship and spirit for the game. In November 2004, Jordan was inducted into the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame.

Katie Hagan returns for her second season as the Bullets assistant lacrosse coach in 2009-10. In her first year on the staff, she helped Gettysburg to a 16-4 overall record and an appearance in the NCAA Division III semifinals.

Hagan starred for four seasons as a member of Gettysburg’s midfield from 2004 to 2007, helping the Bullets to an impressive overall record of 72-11 (.867), including 34-2 (.944) against members of the Centennial Conference. Gettysburg won three conference championships during that time and appeared in the NCAA playoffs all four seasons. In 2006, Hagan helped lead the Bullets to a school-record 21 victories en route to the national title game.

Individually, Hagan appeared in all but four games during her four seasons, accruing 143 points on 90 goals and 53 assists, the latter marking the eighth-highest total in school history. As a senior in 2007, she posted career marks for goals (35), assists (32), points (67), ground balls (43), and caused turnovers (32) en route to being named CC Player of the Year, first-team All-Metro Region, and first-team Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) All-America. In a thrilling regular season contest with top-ranked College of New Jersey, Hagan tallied two goals and two assists, including dishing out the helper on the game-winning goal in overtime.

A native of Media, Pa., Hagan earned a BA in Management from Gettysburg in 2007.
